South America | Montevideo | Rio de la Plata |
Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay, the second-smallest country in South America. Located on the Rio de la Plata in the southern part of the country, the city was founded around 1680 by the Spanish. Uruguay was established over a century later, in 1828, as a buffer state between Argentina and Brazil. Modern-day Montevideo is known for its picturesque architecture, its impressive buildings, and its fabulous beach resorts along the Atlantic Coast. A top destination is Punta Del Este, filled with yacht clubs, casinos and beautiful sunbathers. When not enjoying the resorts, don’t miss La Cuidad Vieja – the old city – with its colonial Spanish structures and narrow, pedestrian-friendly streets. The Natural History Museum fills four old-city buildings that were once homes to national heroes. On Saturdays, the old city becomes a vast antiques market offering fine silver, jewelry and art. Mercado del Puerto, the city’s port market, is the place for seafood as well as traditional parrillada, or beef platters. While dining, visitors enjoy the festive atmosphere, with street vendors and musicians.
